A 53-year-old man was stabbed by a stranger in East Park, at around 2.20pm yesterday.
The victim had walked through the park and as he reached Park Walk, he was involved in a row with another man who was unknown to him, a spokesman for Hampshire Police said.
The man was stabbed with an implement in his lower back and was taken to Southampton General Hospital. His injury was described as serious but not life threatening.
After the incident the offender ran through the park in the direction of New Road.
A Solent Student who was in the area after the incident took place said: ‘there was a large area taped off around the park up to the Titanic memorial and the old Nationwide. There were Police along the restricted area and I saw two police cars pull up. There were a lot of people around the park’.
The offender is described as white, aged between 25 to 30, 5ft 11in to 6ft, and of medium to heavy build. He had a ginger beard and was wearing a dark coloured tracksuit style top and bottoms and a black woolly hat or cap.
Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who saw the offender in the area before or after to contact them on 101 or call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
