A keeper at Bristol Zoo Gardens has been accused of punching a South American fur seal.
The senior keeper attacked one of the zoo’s seals whilst its handlers were attempting to weigh it. The animal put up a struggle during the procedure, at which point the keeper allegedly decided to punch it to pacify it. The head vet at the attraction has examined every seal at the park and they remain on show to the public.
A spokesperson for the zoo said:
“Bristol Zoo would like to make it very clear that it has a zero tolerance towards such behaviour and takes its commitment to the highest standards of animal welfare and conservation seriously.”
No word yet on whether the zookeeper actually hated animals, or had a grudge against seals because one ran off with his wife. Maybe zoo staff should keep him away the next time they’re trying to vaccinate a polar bear, though.
