Record Breaking Hat-Trick for Southampton Tae Kwondo

On Sunday 11th March Southampton University Tae Kwondo Club (SUTKD) took 37 competitors to the annual British Student National Championships and brought home the winner’s trophy for the third year in a row.

This year’s competition was held at Nottingham University and was the second biggest to take place with 275 competitors from 29 University clubs. Our team’s achievement also makes Southampton the most successful University in the country winning a record-breaking five times since the competition began.

Despite a reduced team, two trips to the hospital and changes to the competition rules, SUTKD defended their title with fantastic spirit, beating old-rivals University of the West of England to 1st place. In particular, Stacey Winter demonstrated inspiring courage winning a gold medal in sparring despite feeling ill.

Massive congratulations to the team and to their ever-dedicated coaches Vince Collin, Sheena Au Yeng, Cliff Lee, David Honey, Man Fai Ng and Lorène Lepenant along with many others for their help.
