Great effort from the rugby boys and girls today, with wins for the Mens 2nd and 1st XV as well as the Women’s 1st XV. Unfortunately there was a narrow loss for the 3rd XV. We hope you have enjoyed our coverage today, thanks for sticking with us!
The penalty comes to nothing but the final whistle blows! The final score is 25-10 to Soton.
Penalty to Southampton in the last minute here, there are a few injured players down on the floor.
Portsmouth get a try back to salvage some pride. The conversion is knocked over and the score is 25 10 to Southampton.
Portsmouth pressure comes to nothing yet again. Defence has been solid by the boys in burgundy today!
Nearly over here but TEAM SOUTHAMPTON HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED VICTORS. Not that we haven’t known for a while…
Little bit of Pompey pressure here which again leads to nothing. A soton player intercepts and manages to get a scrum to Soton on the 22. Some more subs and injuries here so another break in the play.
Soton steal it back, but its called back for a scrum to Pompey. Few injuries again so yet another stoppage in the play.
Penalty to Portsmouth, they kick into touch to see if they can get a try to keep some dignity in the defeat with a consolation try.
Final minutes of the game here, but a Soton victory is all but guaranteed.
Penalty to Southampton. They are going to put the icing on the cake here by going for the posts. The kick sails between the posts and Soton lead 25-3.
Soton defending well here against the Pompey pressure, they clear their lines yet again.
Game is starting to slow a tad as some tired legs and injuries make their way into the game.
Some Pompey pressure almost leads to a try but the Soton boys hold strong and manage to clear their lines. Stoppage in play here as a few players are down on the ground after a heavy collision earlier in the play.

Southampton are really going for the jugular here!
The Soton gamble from the line out leads to another try for team Southampton! The conversion is knocked over the posts easily and Soton lead 22-3, great stuff!
Another Penalty to Soton! They go for touch this time really wanting to smash Pompey this second half
Southampton come close again with another flowing move up the right hand side. Portsmouth just keep it out. Line out to Pompey on their 10 meter line.
Some nimble footwork from a Southampton player makes it so that he just reaches the try line. The conversion is easily knocked over and Southampton lead 15-3 now. Fantastic start to this Second Half!

Another Penalty to Southampton, they opt to go for the posts from the halfway line. Amazingly it hits the post, inches from another 3 points to Southampton.
Lovely kick, the ball sails through the posts and Soton now lead 8-3!

Much better start to the Second Half, Southampton with some lovely play down the left hand side.
Second Half about to start. Portsmouth will get us started with the kick-off.
Let’s hope this game opens up a bit more for the Second Half. Some very scrappy rugby being played at times by both sides.
The customary streakers are out for Half Time. Three lads milking the crowd, one even did a flip! Outrageous scenes!
Half Time here at the rugby. Soton with a slender lead of just 5 points to 3.
Portsmouth luckily get a penalty and able to clear their lines. They have a line out on about the half way line.
Soton playing some lovely passing rugby, just made it up to the Pompey 10 meter line again with ease.
The penalty sails over easily and Pompey are now right back in it. It’s 5-3 now to Soton.
Pompey go for the drop goal as they had the advantage, however, it’s missed and they take it back for a Pompey penalty on around the 22 yard line. They’re going for the points.
Pompey currently camped on the Soton 22 but some big hits from the boys in Burgundy are keeping them at bay for now.
Pompey’s turn to respond, they make it to the Soton 22 with a lovely kick into touch to gain the territory.
Portsmouth get away with it after a knock-on by Soton on the Pompey 5 meter line. Another try coming though!

Portsmouth trying to build some pressure now, they have the Soton boys on their own 22 desperately trying to find a way out of their half.
Getting a bit more open now in the Mens game here now, a Portsmouth attack is responded with an excellent Soton drive back up the pitch to counter.
“A lovely game, and I think they enjoyed themselves,” says the referee after the conclusion of the ladies’ game.

A late opportunity from the visitors, with space, falls to ground and the referee blasts the whistle. A thoroughly deserved victory for the Southampton ladies.
Overexuberant passing from the Portsmouth 10 loses them as many metres from a scrum. Her side now eager for one last try.
A nicely worked move by Southampton down the left hand side in the men’s game comes to nothing. Southampton have a scrum just on the Pompey 5 meter line.
Big turn out to watch the men’s 1st XV, both side lines are packed.
Another break in the women’s game as one of Southampton’s earlier try scorers receives medical attention.
Very scrappy game still in the mens game. Neither side have got going yet really.
Portsmouth’s fullback fumbles a clearance kick take but her team still wins a penalty. Their 21 finds another bit of space to put pressure on Southampton.
Southampton clear the danger though and Portsmouth have a line-out on the half way line.

Portsmouth, picking and driving through the 22, lose the ball. A scrappy trip back up the field from our women ends in a Portsmouth penalty at the ruck.
Still no score here at the Men’s game, very stop start rugby.
The Southampton women’s 8 comes off with an injury and we resume with another strong Portsmouth scrum. Still, Southampton are 31-10 up as a pass whisks past the opposition winger into touch.
Another delay here as a Southampton player goes down injured from a collision.

The ladies are pushed back in the scrum and turn the ball over shortly after. Portsmouth’s counter is stopped shortly before the half-way line.
Soton now with a scrum on the Pompey 5 metre line in the men’s.

Another converted try for Southampton sees them move to a 21 point lead in the Women’s 1st XV game.

Men’s 1st XV game kicks off
Portsmouth had a three women overlap but decided to take it into contact, that’s a lucky break for soton.
Very smooth off loading sees soton get to Portsmouth’s 22, before they turn it over and lose the momentum they were building.
The Portsmouth offense kept rolling forward and they managed to get over in the corner to close the lead to two converted scores, Southampton lead 24 – 10.
Portsmouth take a quick penalty and their scrum half slip through, eventually taken down on the twenty two.
Southampton make a change to their front row to start the second half.
Half time, Southampton 24 – 5 Portsmouth.
A well worked forwards pick and go breaks the soton line and Portsmouth finally get try and get on the score sheet, they trail 24 – 5. A simple conversion but it’s missed.
The Portsmouth crowd is getting going as Portsmouth get the closest to the Southampton line they have been this game.
Scrum tone and again the soton number eight goes on a devastating run down the blind side, making twenty metres.
A creative kick through the soton line gives the Portsmouth supporters something to cheer about.
30 minutes, Southampton 24 – 0 Portsmouth.
Soton steal the ball and go down the blind side to around the five metre line before it is yet again knocked on.
Thirteen slips another Portsmouth tackle but is called back to the half way line for a forward pass. Yet another scrum to follow.
So far every Portsmouth venture into Southampton’s half has been short lived and uneventful, it’s hard to see how they could come back into this game at the moment.
A change the front row for Portsmouth, seems to be an injury of some kind, the scrum has been solid for them so far.
The conversion attempt doesn’t get off the ground but that hasn’t dampened any spirits in the Southampton camp.
Soton turn it over and almost went over in the corner, now they spread it the other way and number thirteen goes over for a quick hat trick making it 24-0 Southampton.
Some good passing among the backs but it looks like the Portsmouth line has sorted itself out as the attack fizzles out as soton knock it on at Portsmouth’s 22.
Soton have earnt three quick penalties in Portsmouth’s half, the pressure is building.
The Southampton scrum half takes a quick penalty and gets hit hard for her efforts.
Now Portsmouth try and get going with a rare visit into the soton 22.
A simple show of pace by soton, with number eleven putting on the after burners to go under the posts, and the conversion is good. Southampton lead 19 – 0 just fifteen minutes in.

Now it’s the inside centres turn to run loss and she offloads to thirteen who goes over for her second try, Southampton 12 – 0, conversion to follow.
Fierce rucking by soton on their own twenty two wins them possession.
The pace of the game slows down as the ref resets the scrum.
Women’s 1XVs, 10 minutes, Southampton 7 – 0 Portsmouth.
A simple conversion makes it 7 – 0 Southampton.
Sotons outside centre slipped two tackles and got past the full back with a beautiful side step to score a break away try.

It’s a messy attack and soton opt to kick for the territory.
Portsmouth immediately kick away the possession so Southampton will have the first attack.
And the women’s firsts game is just about to get under way, Southampton to kick off.

That was a big hit by Portsmouth number 5 on his opposite number.
Southampton have blasted their way right back into the Portsmouth 22 from the restart. Things are looking like the result is settled here, just how big the margin is going to be.

The backs are enjoying things now as the subs make an impact, number 22 goes over in the right hand corner.

The backs are linking up all well now, some nice miss passes and loops are being put into use.
Quick line speed forces Portsmouth off their feet in the breakdown and soton win the penalty!
Portsmouth win a kickable penalty but decide to go to the corner.
Repeated fumbles are letting Southampton down at the moment, they need to sort it out if they are too keep the score board ticking over.
Now the changes are occurring, number five for soton heads to the bench and is welcomed with applause.
The soton coach is waving his arms in frustration as Southampton give up an easy turnover.
One phase and soton spread it wide to go over in the corner. Southampton extend their lead to 27 – 11. The conversion is missed.
Slight pause in the game as the scrum sorts itself out.

Now it’s Portsmouth’s turn to run it, they are starting to make metres through their backs.
Maybe sooner than expected. Portsmouth just pushed over for a weak try, 22 – 11, they could still get back into this…
The soton coach is not happy with the compliancy that the team is showing. All replacements have been told to warn up, changes expected soon…
Now they change things up with a little dink over the top towards the soton try line.
That’s a well worked turnover, so far Southampton have nullified everything Portsmouth have thrown at them.
Portsmouth gain a good attacking platform in the form of a line out fifteen metres out.
It’s clean, Southampton lead 22 – 6.
A solid attack leads to soton winning a penalty lined up nicely on the 22. They’ll have a shot at three.
Portsmouth must start the second half still with a man in the bin.

The kick is good, Portsmouth get three back, 19 – 6.
Pompy assert some dominance in the pack and win a penalty, this attempt at goal with be the last act of the half.
But knocked on in the process, Portsmouth have a scrum for the last play of the half.

The confidence is showing as soton launch an attack from their own five metre line.
Southampton are now finding gaps in all kinds of places in the purple line, things are really opening up.
Soton capitalise immediately and get the try and the conversation is good. Southampton notch their third try to make it 19 – 3.

… Portsmouth’s deference has crumbled and the only way to stop the try is a purpose knock on.

It’s scrum time once again, and Southampton give up a penalty in the engagement.
Now some solid phases as Southampton move towards Portsmouth’s 22.
Not releasing at the break down gave Portsmouth a penalty which their kicker slotted for three. Southampton still ahead 7 – 3.

The Southampton captain put the loss down to silly mistakes, particulary in their own half which led to Portsmouth slotting four penalties which effectively won them the match.
Final score for the thirds, Southampton 15 – 26 Portsmouth.
Southampton 3rds trail 19-10 with twenty minutes remaining but are having a good second half.
